The Rolling Stamp Pattern

Get The Pattern

Wow!...you can make your image roll across your card! We have all been to the book store and seen this used in those action books but thought we never could do that.....well now you can! I have done my best to make it as simple as I can :)

First you will need to print your pattern. If you try to print it from the web it will not print the right size. So you will need to save it to your computer.

If you are running windows do this by right clicking on the picture of the pattern. A box will pop up with a list of options. Choose "Save picture as". Now another box will pop up. Choose where you would like the picture to be saved. My documents is a good place. Once you have that done choose "Save". Now go to your "Start" button, "Programs", "Accessories" then "Imaging". Once you have Imaging open, click on "File" and then "Open". Look for where you stored the picture. You should be looking for "cog.jpg" unless you have renamed it. When the image is on your screen just click on the "Print" icon. The lines should end up on the inside of he mechanism so you can just print it directly on your cardstock. If you are using a dark cardstock and the lines are difficult to see just print it on standard white computer paper. Then use a repositionable glue stick on the backside of the computer paper. Stick it to a scrap piece of paper to remove any excess glue. After it has been stuck once any glue that is going to come off will. Now stick it to your cardstock.

Now that you have your pattern printed, score your lines right through the pattern paper or on the printed lines. Before you cut this out and remove the pattern, glue an additional scrap of paper on the back side of the "cog" and the "Pull Tab". This will give them some extra strength. I even used 3 layers on my pull tab for durability but 2 will do. Do not use more than 2 layers of cardstock for the "cog". Now your ready to cut out the mechanism and punch the holes. Use a standard 1/4 inch punch for the "cog" and the "pull tab" but use a 1/8 inch punch for the holes in the "track". If you don't have a long reach punch you may have trouble reaching the holes unless you cut the window out first, bow the paper for the punch to fit in and punch from the window side as you see in picture 2. Be careful, making sure you do not make a crease in the "track" section of your pattern.

We now need to make the paper brad that will enable your cog to roll. You will need to find something that is a 1/4 diameter to wrap the brad section of your pattern around. I found a bamboo skewer worked well (picture 3). Some are larger than others so double check. Put a little glue on one end and press it down forming a tube.

Cut the end of the tube into sections that you can flair out like a flower petal. Make sure you do not cut through the center line as you can see me doing in picture 4. Once you have you have the little "brad" flower, place it through the center hole on the "cog" gluing the petals to one side of the "cog". The hole in the "cog is larger so that the brad will be able to fit through it. Make sure that the "brad" is centered in the hole and not off to one side. Once the glue on the "cog" has dried place it through the hole on the "Pull Tab" but do not glue as in picture 6.

Make sure that the side of the cardstock you put the repositionable glue on, is facing the outside of your mechanism so your cog inside will roll smoothly. Fold the scored line with the punched holes up. Place the "cog" through the window setting the spikes into the punched holes while sandwiching the "pull tab" between the cog and the track window as in picture 7. Fold the other scored line down and glue encasing the "cog" and "pull tab". Make sure you only glue the track case, taking care not to get glue on the "cog" or the "pull tab". Cut the tube section of the "paper Brad" into sections that you can flair it out like a flower petal as you did on the other side. You should be able to pull the tab back and forth rolling the cog along the track. Cut a matching "window" on your card and glue the face of the mechanism to the card so that the "tube" section of the "paper brad" pokes through the window of the card. Again make sure not to get glue on the "cog" or "pull tab". Flair out the "petals" of the brad and glue your image to the "petals". Once again make sure to only get glue on the petals leaving the "cog"free to turn. As it dries pull the tab one hole over and back a couple of times in case any glue has dripped down onto the cog but let your image dry on the mechanism before you try to run it up and down the track.
