The Book Necklace

You will need:

2 pieces of 1-½ inch square of matt board (like what you find on the back of a writing tablet)

1 strip of whatever paper you wish for your cover 1-½ inches wide and about 4-½ inches long

1 strip of whatever paper you wish for inside the cover 1-½ inches wide and about 4-½ inches long (I like to use a pretty lighter-weight paper than used for the cover)

8 pieces of 2-5/8 inch square bond weight paper for your pages if you choose to do the star book

If you choose to do the STICHED pages, you will need to cut the 4 pieces 2-5/8" squares of bond weight paper in half (that is what you will see me doing in pic 1). Fold the top page in half so that you can use the fold as a straight line. Sew down the line. I use my sewing machine but you can also hand stitch. If you use the sewing machine cut the top thread that will be in the center of the book about 1/8" above the stitched line. Now pull on the bottom (bobbin) thread (pic 2). This will pull the tiny end through to the bottom side. Put a dot of glue on the seam to anchor both threads and trim. Do this on both ends of the stitching. Fold in half at the stitching once glue is dry. Open the top page and the bottom page away from the rest of the book and cut the pages in half (pic 3). These ends will go inside the binding later. To make it easier to slip them into the binding

Trim the edge at an angle (pic 4). Now you need to stamp your book. I have found that because of the stitching it is hard to get an image to come out if your stamp goes across the stitching. Seems to work ok in the center of the book where you have an even number of pages on either side. Because of this you need to use 1"x 1" stamps. Or you can put a few layers of paper under the shallow side (Pic 5) so that it is level. That way you can use your 1" x 2" stamps.

If you have chosen the STAR BOOK, you have a little bit more room to work. Although the pages get folded to about 1" x1", when the book is open you have the full square. Stamp the pages before folding. Remember to stamp at an angle as the point will be at the top of the book. Now we are ready to fold the pages of the star book. Fold the opposite two corners together to from a triangle (see pic. 6).

Make sure that your image is to the outside and the top point is on the fold line. Open it back up and turn it over so that the fold is a mountain fold. Now, fold it in half to form a rectangle (see pic. 8) open it back up again and fold it in half the other direction to form a rectangle in the opposite direction. When you open it up it should look like Pic.9. If you are holding it as shown in pic. 9, turn it over and pinch in the sides that have the crease. It should fold as you see in pic 10. Fold all 8 pages this way.

Now, place two squares side by side with the points pinched between your fingers (pic. 11). The two sides that touch are the sides you will glue together. Keep adding pages making sure your images are in order and all the top points face the same direction as each page is opened. You do not glue the last page to the front. The section that you would glue (if adding another page) will be glued to the binding. The same it true for the first page, but if you pinch them together they form the star (see Pic. 12).

Now that we have our pages done, let's work on the cover. Take one of your cardboard squares and wrap the paper you have cut for the cover around it (Pic 13.) The sides will not be covered at this point. Trim it so that the paper meets but doesn't overlap. Next, take the paper you trimmed for the inside cover and taper the edge just a little with your scissors (Pic. 14). Stick the tapered edge between the cardboard and the cover paper (Pic. 15.) Fold it over the cardboard and the open ends of the cover paper.

Trim off the excess inside cover paper leaving about ½" hanging over the edge (Pic. 16). Taper the ½ " of excess paper (Pic 17) so that you can tuck it easily between the cover paper and the cardboard on the other side (Pic. 18). Do the same thing to the other cardboard square. If you are doing the STICHED PAGES, take the tapered front page and tuck it also between the cardboard and the cover paper. Then do the same with the tapered back page

If you are doing the STAR PAGES skip to the next step. Close your book and cut ½ inch of the cover paper and tuck between the cover and the cardboard on the outside of the book to form the spine (see Pic 21).

Fold the leaf finding in half and glue to the top point on your book to form a bail for your cord to go through. I use super glue for this to ensure it is strong. Tie a loop on the end of a piece of embroidery floss and cut it off. Glue the knot between the cover paper and the cardboard at the bottom point of the front cover (Pic. 22) for both books. I also use super glue here for strength. Cut a piece of the metallic embroidery floss about 16 to 18 inches long. This is to make the tie that will hold your book closed when you are wearing it. Fold it in half and glue to the inside of the spine (Pic. 23.) If you are doing the STITCHED BOOK, you can just pull the pages out, glue the cord in the spine and then replace the pages. If you are doing the STAR BOOK, glue your pages to the inside cover (front and back) of the book now. Drape the cording across the back of your book and pull through the loop you made on the front of the book. With a beading needle or a piece of wire folded in half, thread both ends of the floss through one bead. This needs to be tight to hold the book closed - so if you picked a bead with a large hole it will not hold the book closed well. You will have to experiment with this to find the right size hole for your cording. It should be little tough to get the cord through. I pull one cord through then the next one. On the second cord I usually will have to use pliers on the wire to pull it through. Now, thread decorative beads on both ends of the cording according to taste. Cut another piece of the metallic embroidery floss about 20" long and thread through the bail. I like to thread both ends of the floss through a single bead here too, but you can do this however you like. Super glue the ends of the cord into the cord end findings and pinch closed with your pliers (see the findings center top of Pic. 27.) Put a jump ring through the hole on the end of the cord and then the loop on the end of the barrel finding and squeeze closed. I like to turn the ring now so that the opening is on the side and pinch the ring into an oval. That way it will not work itself around to allow the cord ending to work through the hole where the jump ring closed.
